The Adventures of Frowie the Front Rower: Chapter 8

Coco Rocha talks about anorexia

Model Opens Up About Pressure to Be Thin
By Marc Karimzadeh

NEW YORK — "Be considerate, be compassionate and please remember how powerful your words can be and use them to make a positive change."

Model Coco Rocha's words struck a note with the audience at Wednesday's Council of Fashion Designers of America event, where CFDA president Diane von Furstenberg, Michael Kors and the model led a discussion on "The Beauty of Health: How the Fashion Industry Can Make a Difference."

Illustrating a day in the life of a model, Rocha said: "She wakes up in the morning, goes to the bathroom to take a shower and runs by the full-length mirror because she can't bare to look at herself naked. She only weighs 104 pounds, but all she can think is, I need to be thinner. She hurries to her first show, where she promises herself she'll eat a few grapes. But when she gets there, there's nothing but pastries. First looks are called, she puts on her dress and it takes three people to zip her up. The dresser makes a joke, 'We almost had to call the agency and tell them you didn't fit.' All the girl can think is, I better not eat until tomorrow."

The pressure to stay thin is immense and even Rocha wasn't immune. The advice she got from industry types didn't help.

"They said, 'You need to lose more weight — the look this year is anorexia, and although we don't want you to be anorexic, we want you to look it,'" she recalled. "My question is, how do you look anorexic unless you actually are?"

The model and some of her colleagues came up with four suggestions, including the importance of increased awareness of the impact dieting and eating disorders can have, from heart failure to osteoporosis; encouraging agencies to work closely with nutritionists, trainers and doctors to give models the resources for help, healthier food options at the shows and hiring bigger fit models.

"I can't tell you how many times I've heard, 'Don't worry, Coco, it's not you, it's our fit model. She's so skinny,'" Rocha said. "That's where the problem starts. And if that's the case, then maybe we could do something about it."

Kors said it is not a question of thinness, but how it can be achieved healthily. "Being thin, we know, is about genetics, sleep, a healthy diet and exercise and hopefully not about starvation, bulimia, too many cigarettes or dressing a preadolescent girl up to look like an adult," he said.

Kors had several suggestions of his own to improve a model's well-being. "You have to treat these girls as individuals, not mannequins," he said. "Engage them in conversation when you meet them."

The audience included designers Donna Karan, Francisco Costa, Derek Lam, Marchesa's Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig, Doo-Ri Chung, Phillip Lim, Richard Chai and Michael Vollbracht.

It will be a very good year

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
Today's my birthday. I turn... wait, let's say I'm older than Dakota Fanning and younger than Ashley Olsen.
This year's been quite busy and complicated, but I have the feeling that it is going to change. I expect 365 exciting days, full of new experiences and good moments.

At the moment nothing can go wrong, unless Spain didn't win the Euro Cup, which is very unlikely because they are the best football players and Casillas is the best goalkeeper in the world.

I have two long months to have fun at the pool and at the beach, nothing to worry about, and when I return in September I will celebrate my birthday at the rooftop pool of my house, then I'll go to the fashion shows, and Marc Jacobs is opening a boutique in Madrid in October... god, I feel so happy today, really. I'm actually singing out loud "Whistle for the Choir" by The Fratellis. I recommend to listen this song.

To pass my happiness on, here you have this editorial from Vogue UK, you'll recognize the pic below because I used it for one of the wallpapers I posted on the last post.
This is one of my favourite editorials (I just realized I have too many favourite editorials), it reminds me of the film The Virgin Suicides and the Daisy Marc Jacobs ad, don't you think they look very similar?
These pics are so peaceful and calm... You can feel the nature and the silence, the sweet smell of the flowers, the fresh air...

Feeling Poetic

Haiku is a kind of Japanese poetry. It is 5 syllables, 7 syllables and 5 syllables.
I was feeling "Haiku" today so I wrote some haiku poems for the first time. It is so addictive!

Hey Jude it's summer
grab a towel and go now

to the pool with me.

I bought magazines
but I've read them all today
fashion I love you.

I wanna meet A. Wang
He's better than Marc Jacobs
oh Alexander.

I can not stop it,
I am listening all day
The Virgins Rich Girls.

There's a ladybird
at my window, it is red
with black dots. Goodbye.

I miss Yves so much
wanna go to Morocco
and see his blue house.

I love love haikus
Plus they are easy to write
They are so so cute

Try to write your own haiku, it is fun.

I've been tagged by Vain and Vapid , Unbirthday Tea Party and Style du Monde. These are the seven songs I'm currently listening to now.

Note: The fashion shows I was talking in the last post are only Madrid Fashion Week. I wish it was Paris or NY.

That's what friends are for

The other day talking to my friend A:
Me: So did I tell you I am going to Fashion Week in September?
A: Really?
Me: Yes, It's great. I am contributor to this magazine and I have to go to all the fashion shows and write down everything I see, like "this season platform shoes will be a must" and then write up an article for the magazine
A: I see... so, like in school
Me: Hmm... yeah

And that's how all my excitement disappeared.

-----------------------------
A: ¿Sí?

Markets and Movies

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

So, as I said, on Saturday I went to Beefeater London Market. In spite of the bad reviews I had read, I must say that I totally loved it. We arrived at 11:30 and, thanks to the press tickets, I found the entire market almost for myself, there wasn't many people. First I entered the Cyberdog stall, which was installed inside a black tent. Yes, a black tent. I almost died inside because of the heat, so I didn't buy anything, but I spotted some nice t-shirts (I don't know what stopped me from buying a t-shirt with the drawing of a dog like Tinkerbell. I think I prefer the Elena Gallen designs). Then I bought a black handbag with the shape of a pizza and then I found the stall with the rock bands t-shirts. I spent almost all my money there, I bought 5 t-shirts, one of The Who for my brother, one of The Velvet Underground (with the banana drawn by Andy Warhol), one of the Sex Pistols, one of a band whose name I don't remember and another one of Sex Pistols. I love all of them! I was heading to the next stall when suddenly a guy with a green jacket and ridiculously short shorts appeared from nowhere. He was Henry Holland! He went directly to his stall and posed for the photographers. I took some photos too, and, lucky me, he let me take his photo when all the photographers were already gone. He was very nice.

I bought a House of Holland t-shirt, of course! It was funny because there was a girl that accompanied him (not the one with the red uniform) that looked exactly like Agyness Deyn. It took me some seconds to realize that she was just a normal girl. Then I bought a lovely dress from a different stall and, as I had no money left and it was so hot I thought I would melt at any moment, I went home. I had a great time, and next year, I will come back!

The t-shirt I bought:

Sex and the City, the Movie

I finally watched it today. I loved it, no matter what they say. It is not a "haute film", but I saw what I was expecting: clothes, clothes, clothes and... oh, clothes. It was a pleasure for the eyes. I needed a new film about fashion, I have watched Devil Wears Prada too many times. I've promised myself I won't watch it again in five years.
The plot was average, I wasn't bored at any moment of the film, but everything was so predictable.

The best: Carrie's closet at the new attic, the Lacroix she wears at the Vogue photoshoot, the Vivienne Westwood fashion show and the scene of Steve and Miranda at the bridge.
The worst: The dialogues, the wedding dress (I don't like it, right?) and the fact that Charlotte's part wasn't very important.

What did you think of the movie?

-------------------------

¡Me habría llevado todas! :D.

Nine Stories by J. D. Salinger
I love these short stories, Salinger is such a great writer. I think it is amazing how he managed to write a whole story in "Franny and Zooey" just by a dialogue and the wonderful descriptions of the characters.

Uptown Girls
Britanny Murphy, Dakota Fanning (that girl is an amazing actress, don't you think?) and Jesse Spencer.
The clothes are beautiful in this film, and the story of the two girls is beautiful too. I love the part when she's selling her clothes and a woman wants to buy a dress, but she tries to stop her saying "No! That's an authentic Anna Molinari!"
