Magazines I read every month

Elle Spain: I love love love the supplements. They come in giant size and the pics are always cheerful and colourful, the styles they present are totally wearable and they give you many ideas for different outfits.
I like Kristin Gore's (yes, like Al Gore, she's his niece) articles, while Alexandra Costeau's are rather boring. It is reasonable that Kristin used to work for the hilarious show Futurama, she writes very well and her articles about ecology and the importance of nature are always fun and pleasant to read. I also enjoy Elvira Lindo's articles. When I was 8 I used to read her "Manolito Bigglasses" books over and over again, I loved them. Some months before they used to publish Mill Milington's articles, which were witty and funny, but they stopped publishing them, which was a great loss.
The "Elle Shops" spreads are quite useful too, they give original ideas for presents and they offer many just "released" items that nobody knows yet (well, except for its thousands readers).
The editorials are normal, not very good but not very bad.

Elle UK: I think it is my favourite magazine. I read almost every page of it, when normally I skip the pages of the articles that look boring. I enjoy reading this page from the "Letter from the editor" to the "In her shoes" section. It is great how they illustrate the season must-haves with affordable items, topshop, h&m, French Connection, Oasis, just opened shops... comparing with other magazines, they recommend clothes for every economy. With magazines as Vogue, I read their pages as an inspiration, but with Elle UK, I even think to myself that I could buy the items they show. Sandals for 70 euros, jeans for 90 euros... I also admire how they usually put clothes from british designers. Spanish magazines should do that as well.
I also love the mini-tips they give, always useful, and how they classify the clothes by body shapes, as "Petite", "Curvy", "Tall", "Boyish"... it is very helpful when you still don't know which type of clothes fit your body. For example, short hair makes you look taller, and wide pants make you look shorter. I already knew those things, but in the magazine they give some new clues.
The editor's name is so cute, "Lorraine Candy".

Vogue UK: I like the editorials and some articles.

Vogue España: I adore the "En Vogue spreads", the art articles and some of the editorials. I hate when they make reprints of other magazines as Vogue USA. It usually gets me very mad. It is like they haven't put an effort to make a new and unique editorial for the magazine, they just take the job of others. I know they work at the same editorial and they are allowed to do that, but I think you know what I mean. Nevertheless, when they publish editorials shot exclusively for Vogue España, you would be surprised at how good some of them are. Look at this one, "Al alba", or the last post I made, with Anouck Lepère. The last page of the magazine is one of my favourites, they explain the history of certain fashion items, as the bow, the leopard print, the prints of pucci...
I like this magazine because the clothes they put are always beautiful and wearable, elegant and chic. I find better styled than the Italian edition, in terms of articles, not editorials. But the items are always extremely expensive, they don't put any clothes from cheaper shops as Zara or H&M, a thing Elle UK does.


Vogue US: I don't like anything from this magazine except for some amazing editorials that they publish sporadically. For example, the Marie Antoinette editorial with Kirsten Dunst, the 20's editorial or the Alice in Wonderland editorial. I used to like Annie Leibovitz more than anything, but lately all her editorials look the same to me.

Vogue Paris: I love their editorials more than anything. They are always original and new, fashionable and elegant. The only thing is that there has to be a naked model in every editorial, but nobody's perfect, even Carine. I don't need to say how much I like the "En Vogue" and "Une fille un style" spreads. Do I need to? Well, I ADORE those pages. I could use them as wallpaper for my bedroom, but I don't want to tear them off the magazine. They way they present the season must-buys is different for every issue, they always come up with new ideas, like photographing photographs of the items.

I also like that they recommend many good films, not only commercial and typical ones, they review some independent movies that go right to my "must watch" list.
It is a good way to improve my french too!

Vogue Italia: The fact that Steven Meisel photographs every cover of this magazine is a must-buy per se. It could be boring and repetitive that the same photographer made all the covers, but Steven Meisel always has new ideas. I buy this magazine only for the editorials, as the articles don't appeal to me. I read once "Vogue Casa" but it was quite boring.

Nylon: I forgot to add this one. I like this magazine because the editorials are very different from what we usually see in other magazines. I really like the styling and the clothes they recommend, also, the music and movies are really important for this magazine, they always interview young and promising actors and musicians. I must admit that I like this magazine because they have Cory Kennedy, Mark the Cobrasnake...
I subscribed to this magazine, although I hate subscriptions because the magazines never arrive at my mailbox. Maybe the doorman's wife is keeping them. Anyway, I always check if the nylon has arrived or not, and from now, I have been able to read them.

Vanidad: I really like this magazine. I've said it before, but anyway. The editorials are fresh and young, the clothes are totally unseen, and many times they are from (good) spanish designers. Plus 10 points. The articles are fun to read. I love the design of the magazine, it is very elegant but modern at the same time.

View (of the times): It is from the same creators of Vanidad, and they are very similar. I have only two issues, as it comes out only each season (S/S, F/W). The styling of the editorials is amazing, I remember that I saw a coyboy-esque jacket and I looked for it in every shop, but couldn't find it. It was very upsetting. I really loved that jacket.
The magazine is really big, which is a plus, as I like looking at the details of the photos. Some magazines are so tiny that you can't see the clothes properly.

Marie Claire España: I like this magazine too. I've read foreign editions of this magazine but my favourite is Marie Claire España, no doubt. The editorials are sometimes good, but the thing I like from this magazine are the first 50 pages of it. They publish original articles, as the "Cool Hunting" one, or the trend reviews. Jordi Labanda draws a little story at the end of the magazine. The stories are really bad, but I love the drawings. I remember how I used to describe people as "a Labanda Girl", that meant she was very stylish and elegant.
The supplements are the best thing of the magazine. The covers are designed by Jordi Labanda, and the articles are original and unique. Remember this one?

Elle España: Me encantan encantan encantan sus suplementos. Vienen en tamaño gigante y las foto son siempre alegres y coloridas, los estilos que presentan son muy ponibles y te dan muchas ideas para vestirte.
Los artículos de Kristin Gore (sí, como Al Gore, es su sobrina) me gustan bastante, mientras que los de Alexandra Costeau son bastante aburridos. Es razonable que Kristin fuera guionista de Futurama, escribe muy bien y sus artículos sobre ecología y la importancia de la naturaleza son siempre graciosos y fáciles de leer. También me gustan los artículos de Elvira Lindo. De pequeña me encantaban sus libros, "Manolito Gafotas", los leía una y otra vez. Hace tiempo solían publicar artículos de Mill Millington, y eran buenísimos, no sé por qué han dejado de publicarlos.
La sección "Compras Elle" es bastante útil, te dan ideas originales de cosas que acaban de sacar y que nadie conoce aún (bueno, excepto sus miles de lectores).
Las editoriales son normales, ni buenas ni malas.

Elle UK:Yo creo que es mi revista favorita. Leo cada página, cuando normalmente me suelo saltar los artículos que no me interesan con el resto de revistas. Disfruto desde la carta de la editora hasta la sección "en sus zapatos". Está fenomenal cómo ilustran las tendencias de la temporada con artículos no demasiado caros, de Zara, H&M, Topshop, French Connection, Oasis, tiendas nuevas... comparando con otras revistas, recomiendan artículos para cualquier presupuesto. Con revistas como Vogue, suelo leerlas como inspiración, pero con la de Elle UK, pienso incluso en comprarme lo que ponen. Sandalias por 70€, vaqueros por 90€... Admiro cómo incluyen a diseñadores ingleses entre sus páginas. Las revistas españolas deberían hacer eso también.
También me encantan los miniconsejos que dan, y cómo clasifican la ropa según "Petite", "Curvy", "Tall", "Boyish"... es muy útil cuando aún no sabes qué tipo de ropa te sienta mejor. Por ejemplo, el pelo corto te hace parecer más alta, pero los pantalones anchos te hacen parecer más baja. Ya sabía esas cosas, pero en la revista te dan otros consejos bastante útiles.
El nombre de la editora es gracioso: "Lorraine Candy".

Vogue UK: Me gustan las editoriales y algunos artículos, es mucho mejor que Vogue USA.

Vogue España:Me gusta la sección de "En Vogue", los artículos sobre arte y algunas editoriales. Odio que hagan reprints de las portadas/artículos/editoriales de revistas como Vogue USA. Me suele enfadar bastante, es como si no se hubieran esforzado ni un pelo para hacer una editorial propia, simplemente cogen el trabajo de otros. Ya sé que son de la misma editorial y que pueden hacer eso, pero creo que ya me entendéis. Sin embargo, cuando hacen ellos mismos las editoriales, los resultados suelen ser muy buenos. Por ejemplo, ésta editorial: "Al alba", o el post que hice hace unos días de Anouck Lepère. La última página es una de mis secciones favoritas, donde explican la historia de determinados artículos de ropa, como los lazos, el estampado de leopardo, los estampados de Pucci...
Me gusta esta revista porque la ropa que ponen es siempre muy elegante, chic y ponible, en mi opinión, está mejor que la ropa que ponen en la edición italiana, en cuanto a artículos, no editoriales. Lo único malo es que siempre ponen ropa carísima, no ponen nunca nada de tiendas más baratas como Zara o H&M, cosa que Elle UK sí hace.

Vogue US: No me gusta nada en particular de esta revista excepto por varias editoriales buenas que publican esporádicamente. Por ejemplo, la editorial deMarie Antoinette con Kirsten Dunst, la editorial de los años 20 o la de Alice in Wonderland . Antes me solía gustar la fotografía de Annie Leibovitz, pero últimamente todas sus editoriales me parecen iguales.

Vogue Paris:Las editoriales son las que más me gustan. Son siempre originales, nuevas y elegantes. Lo único que siempre tiene que haber alguna modelo desnuda, pero bueno, nadie es perfecto, incluso Carine. No hace falta que diga lo mucho que me gusta la sección "En Vogue" o "Une fille un style", ¿o sí?. Las adoro. Podría usarlas para empapelar mi habitación, pero me da pena arrancar las hojas de la revista. La forma en que presentan los must-buys de la temporada es diferente en cada número, siempre tienen nuevas ideas, como fotografiar fotos de los artículos. El equipo tan bueno que tienen (Géraldine Saglio, Emmanuelle Alt...)
También me gusta que recomiendan cine independiente, películas que van directamente a mi lista de "tengo que ver".
Y eso una buena manera de mejorar el francés!

Vogue Italia:El hecho de que Steven Meisel fotografíe la portada cada mes en una razón de sobra para comprar esta revista. Aunque Steven Meisel fotografíe la portada de cada mes desde hace quince años más o menos, no es para nada aburrido ni repetitivo, siempre tiene nuevas ideas. Sólo compro la revista por las editoriales, ya que los artículos no me atraen demasiado. Una vez leí Vogue Casa, pero era bastante aburrida.

Nylon: Se me había olvidado poner esta revista, y eso que es de mis preferidas. Me gustan mucho sus editoriales, son muy diferentes a las que suelen publicar otras revistas. La ropa que recomiendan en más para jóvnes, y le dan mucha importancia a la música, a las nuevas bandas, y al cine, siempre entrevistan a nuevos actores y músicos prometedores. Y debo reconocer que e también por todo lo que ponen a Cory Kennedy, Mark the Cobra Snake... en el fondo me encanta ese mundillo. Bueno, en el fondo no, en la superficie. Estoy suscrita a esta revista, aunque no me gusta nada suscribirme porque nunca me llegan, debe de ser que la mujer del portero se las queda. De todas formas, con Nylon estoy más pendiente y por ahora me llegan todas.

Vanidad: Me encanta esta revista. Ya lo he dicho antes, pero da igual. Las editoriales son frescas y desenfadadas (qué cliché de revista esa palabra, "desenfadado", cada peinado es"desenfadado y casual"), la ropa es nueva normalmente, no son prendas que ya hemos visto mil veces en las revistas, y muchas veces son de (buenos) diseñadores españoles. Más 10 puntos. Los artículos son muy divertidos. El diseño de la revista es muy bueno también, elegante pero moderno. Me gusta la fuente que usan que une la "s" y la "t".

View (of the times):Es de los mismos creadores de Vanidad, y son bastante parecidas. Sólo tengo dos números de esta revista, porque salen cada temporada (O/I, P/V). El styling de la editoriales es impresionante. Recuerdo cuando vi una vez una chaqueta estilo cowboy en una de sus editoriales y me gustó tanto que estuve buscándola durante días, sin encontrarla en ninguna tienda.
La revista es gigante, lo que es un plus, ya que me gusta mrar los detalles de las fotos. Algunas revistas son tan enanas que no se puede ver bien la ropa.

Marie Claire España:Me gusta también mucho esta revista. He leído otras ediciones pero sin duda la que más me gusta es la española. A veces las editoriales son buenas, pero lo que más me gusta de la revista son sus primeras 50 páginas. Publican artículos muy interesantes, como uno que se llama "Cool Hunting", o las reviews de tendencias. Jordi Labanda dibuja unas historietas al final de cada número. Las historias son bastante malas, pero los dibujos me encantan. Recuerdo que antes solía decir "Es una chica Labanda" si era elegante y estilosa.
Los suplementos son lo mejor de la revista. Las portadas las hace Jordi Labanda, y los artículos son buenísimos. ¿Recordáis éste sobre cómo colarse en los desfiles?

Smoke & Mirrors

Let's not open a yes/no smoking debate. (I'm against breathing toxic air). But let's enjoy some backstage pics of models smoking. Just think how their skin will look after years of cigarettes!

I just saw this picture of Tasha (thanks anonymous commenter :) from Viktor & Rolf, which is my favourite backstage picture, and I had to post it. It shows how the smokers are in desperate need of cigarettes 24/7, but also shows the beauty of good photography.

So now, which models are non-smokers? That's the question.

Notes: The only model I know she doesn't smoke is Caroline Trentini.
It is sad, I was disappointed when I saw Gemma or Jeisa smoking...

Do you know what I love more than fashion editorials? Summerish fashion editorials. That is, editorials that remind me of summer.

Spanish magazines usually disappoint me when it comes to editorial material, but the exceptions are really good. For example, Vanidad editorials are always original and colourful, and when Vogue goes wild, the results are pretty good too.

This time I'm posting this fabulous editorials. This is one of my favourite editorials EVER, and I don't know why. Maybe it is the colour (it is always the colour), or the model (Anouck Lepère is fantastic, one of the few women who looks good on a fringe), or the surroundings (pools, summer nights, palm trees...), the seventies feeling (a good fashion époque before many years of fashion disasters), the sun of L.A (I need to go there), the clothes (I'd wear everything), the hairstyle (very elegant)...

¿Sabéis qué me gusta más que las editoriales de moda? Las editoriales de moda veraniegas. Aquellas que me recuerdan al verano.
Las revistas españolas me suelen decepcionar en cuanto a material de editoriales, pero las excepciones son realmente buenas. Por ejemplo, las editoriales de Vanidad son siempre originales y coloridas, y cuando Vogue se arriesga, los resultados son buenísimos.
Esta vez publico esta genial editorial. Es una de mis cinco favoritas, y eso que me gustan infinitas editoriales. No sé por qué me gusta tanto. Puede que sea el color (siempre es el color), o la modelo (Anouck Lepère es fantástica, una de las pocas mujeres a las que de verdad le queda bien el flequillo), o el ambiente (la piscina, las palmeras, una noche de verano...), el toque de los setenta (una época brillante en la moda, antes de años de desastres en cuanto al estilo) o el sol de Los Ángeles (tengo que ir), la ropa (me pondría todo lo que sale en esta editorial), el corte de pelo (muy elegante)...

Save Polaroid!

I've been dying for a Polaroid Automatic camera. I looked on ebay and there were some cameras for less than $10 (great! I thought) But then I saw that the film costs $60 for 50 shots.
Why did they stop producing automatic cameras and film? Why? WHY??

Lo que más me apetecería ahora es empezar a hacer fotos sin ton ni son con una polaroid automática. Miré en ebay y venden algunas por menos de 10 dólares (¡genial! pensé yo). Pero entonces vi lo que costaba un carrete de 50 fotos: 60 dólares.
¿Por qué dejaron de producir cámaras automáticas y carretes? ¿Por qué?
