Fashion according to The Simpsons

the simpsons

I saw the “My sister, my sitter” (1997) episode this weekend (the one where Lisa babysits Bart and he behaves badly on purpose and breaks his arm). I realized once more how good The Simpsons series are when I saw that they showed a “Turban Oufitters” shop in the new shopping area of Springfield… It is hilarious! I love seeing hidden jokes on Matt Groening’s episodes. By the way, do you watch Futurama'? It’s awesome.

One of my favourite episodes is “Scenes of the class struggle in Springfield”, in which Marge buys a second-hand Chanel suit for $90 and everybody starts to think she’s classy and elegant and invite her to all sorts of preppy events. As she only owns her green dress and she can’t show up wearing it, she modifies the Chanel suit several times until her friends realize and criticize her. She can’t afford designer clothes, and she decides that’s not the lifestyle she wants (or the lifestyle she can have).

This episode shows in a very illustrating way how expensive clothes can turn you into a whole new person and create a fake image around them. What do you think'? It’s a quite interesting debate.

---------------------

This image is fun. Lisa convinces Marge about buying the suit by saying that it was $2800… I wonder how many times I’ve bought something encouraged by the fact that it used to be more expensive.
